Unfortunately, I’m in that in-between stage in parenting–teenagers and no grandkids on the horizon…yet. I remember how I relished working the book fairs at my kids’ elementary school, because there were so many witty, excellent books for children. But it has been four years since my youngest pleaded with me for money to take to the school book fair.
However, I can tell a good children’s book at a glance and so, if you still need an entertaining read for your little ones, I highly recommend Chase McKay Didn’t Get Up Today by Cindy R. Williams. It’s not brand new, but it was a finalist for the Arizona 2008 Glyph Awards and it’s making the rounds of schools all over.
The author describes it, herself, as a “sing-songy, rhyming, snuggle and giggle book for ages newborn to age eight…well loved by children, parents and grandchildren for its endearing story and charming pictures.”
It can be ordered at any bookstore, and is also available on her website, or from Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com.
For a fascinating look into the author’s background and how this book came to be, I encourage you to check out her website, as well as a terrific interview she did with Tina Scott on her blog.
In fact, I don’t know how Cindy keeps up with all her own blogs. Not only does she regularly interview other writers like me at Writer’s Mirror, but she has a blog about dragons (in preparation for her next book…she’s just gearing up on this one), crazy stuff in life, and even one that makes a game out of writing stories (though that one is presently in half hiatus, while she’s at work on rewrites).
How does she do it all? (Hint: Read her interview with Marsha Ward.) In any case, my hat’s off to her and I’ll be sure to get my own copy of Chase McKay Didn’t Get Up Today and store it for that first little grandchild.
Tanya, thanks so much for the wonderful post! I had no idea you were doing this, and found it tonight. Nice buzz! Thanks again! My dragons thank you too!
I always believe in keeping authors and dragons happy (particularly when they’ve been good to me)…We need all the support we can get!
